How does William's Syndrome affect a person?
Appearance/Personality:
People with Williams Syndrome are usually noted to have a "small upturned nose, long philtrum (upper lip length), wide mouth, full lips, small chin, and puffiness around the eyes." They also have small, widely spaced teeth. (What) Many people describe people with William's Syndrome to be very nice, friendly, social, loving, and a wonderful person to be with overall.
Short Term/Everyday Problems:
First and foremost, people with William's Syndrome have huge feeding problems in their younger ages, as they have a pretty bad gag reflex, bad ability to swallow, bad muscle tone overall, etc (in fact, I had to play Spongebob Squarepants opening theme 20+ times to get Alif to eat!). The bad muscle tone also contributes to problems in walking at times, and using their joints. For example, Alif walks slowly with a type of lumber, which looks more fluid than concrete. They also have very sensitive hearing, getting startled with loud noises, such as a car alarm, etc. The people usually have learning/cognitive disabilities, for example not talking until 5-6, or not getting potty trained until later. Some of them are like autistic people in the fact that they have certain strengths and weaknesses in intelligence. (add pic of feeding Alif (I actually know this from experience so no citation)
Diseases/Other problems people with William's Syndrome are more susceptible to:
Some diseases that come with William's Syndrome include heart problems (because the elastin gene is deleted so blood vessels are less useful), hypercalcemia (elevated blood calcium levels), and kidney problems.
